Explosion-proof lighting isn't designed to survive an explosion. Instead, it's crafted to suppress sparks that could ignite nearby flammable and explosive gases. These fixtures are built to avert external explosions in dangerous areas.
Generally, explosion-proof lights come encased in a tough shell, often made of steel or aluminum. They're fitted with super-durable lenses to withstand rough conditions and prevent any cracks that might cause leaks.
Using explosion-proof fixtures reduces the risk of explosion by preventing the ignition of nearby flammable gases and vapors. In addition, the National Fire Protection Association's (NFPA) National Electrical Code (NEC) requires that all lighting in hazardous locations be explosion-proof.
Due to their rugged design, these fixtures rarely explode or catch fire. As a result, the safety of employees working in these hazardous locations is increased!
